Protein is essential. Especially whilst doing any form of exercise and certainly when your body requires more energy such as high-intensity training, moving house or preparing for a baby to arrive.
Protein builds and repairs muscle and transports used hormones, so is essential not only for men but for women, especially during the first phase of your cycle day 1 - 14.
If you are not sensitive to dairy then whey protein would be the prefered option - post-training. This will help to rebuild and repair tissue and muscle.
Women need not be fearful of bulking up and putting on more weight when they eat breakfast and eat at the right times. Starving your body and training will only deprive your body of the energy it needs to train. In turn, this will lead to your body holding onto the food you eat as fuel. Protein transports hormones and enzymes and is involved in almost every function in the body. This is essential for energy. You will find increasing your protein intake will help you focus more throughout the day and help tone your body.
