Quercetin - The Natural Antihistamine

Updated: Jan 30

Let’s talk about Quercetin – yes, it’s a bit of a mouthful, but trust me, it’s magic!

This natural antihistamine is your secret weapon for preventing and managing allergic reactions—whether it's for seasonal sniffles, a pesky insect bite, or even a food allergy flare-up. It’s a must-have for your first aid kit, especially when traveling abroad.

For the kiddos, Quercetin is a game-changer! It helps calm those allergy symptoms (think runny nose and itchy eyes) without the dreaded drowsy side effects that come with typical antihistamines. I mean, who needs to be knocked out by allergies, right? Not on my watch!

So, what makes Quercetin so special? Well, it’s packed with flavonoids, which are antioxidants that help strengthen the immune system. And if you’re ever confused about what antioxidants do—they neutralise free radicals. In other words, they fight the nasties that try to mess with your cells and DNA.

This superhero ingredient can be found in everyday foods like green apples, red onions, dark berries, citrus fruits, and even green tea. It works by calming down the histamine-happy mast cells in your body, making it easier for kids (and adults) to breathe easy when allergens are in the air.

Now, about those free radicals… they come from the environment, certain foods, and even exercise. While they’re not the worst thing in the world, too many free radicals over time can mess with your DNA. If you’ve got Oestrogen dominance, I wouldn’t recommend taking Quercetin daily, but during allergy season? Go ahead and sprinkle some into your routine for a little extra support.

Speaking of which—if you’re off on holiday or dealing with seasonal nasties, Quercetin is perfect for things like insect bites, eczema flare-ups, hay fever, psoriasis, IBS, and food allergies. It helps stabilise the immune cells that release histamine, keeping your body in check and your symptoms at bay.

In my own emergency stash, I keep the kids’ version from Crystal Nutri called ImmunExtra, and for adults, I swear by Viridian. The Viridian formula is packed with pure, natural ingredients like B5, nettle, chamomile, pine bark, and acerola.

Together, they create an anti-inflammatory powerhouse that works wonders all year long—especially during the high-pollen spring months! I even used it on my husband when his eye had a reaction, and boom—swelling gone!!

But hey, no supplement is a one-size-fits-all, and while I love these products, there are tons of other natural options with Quercetin. So, find what works best for you and keep it handy—because you never know when allergy season (or that surprise bug bite) will hit!
